well there are many distributions of Linux available (called distros for short)
you may ask “which distro is right for me?” but nobody can answer that question, simply because it’s like asking “what’s your fav colour” everyones answer could be different.
the “Daddy” of linux is Debian (http://www.debian.org/) but the most popular distro is Ubuntu
with Linux you can customize everything, like for example you may like KDE (K Desktop Envinonment, usually default on Debian)
to start with i would suggest you use Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE rather than GNOME (usually default on Ubuntu), or you can install both or visit distrowatch (www.Distrowatch.com) and read a brief but comprehsive explaintion of each distro or read a detailed review
personally i started on Kubuntu back when 6.06 (Dapper) was released, to clarify Dapper was released in June 2006 (the sixth month hense the “06″ & 2006, hense the first 6) curently we are on release 11.04 Natty (well that’s Ubuntus numbering scheme)

BTW: most distros are free and you can download a LiveCD (try using Linux by booting from a CD as aposed to hard drive)
assuming you choose you can download the .iso file here http://www.kubuntu.org/getkubuntu/download
by just selecting 32bit unless you are sure the target system is 64bit (select 32bit if you are unsure because 32bit will work on both 32 & 64 bit systems but 64 will only work on 64bit systems)
